It has all of the features that homeowners and renters could want in a beach town: brightly colored homes, palm trees, and ocean or river views. At just over 1,500 local residents, Kure Beach offers a more peaceful environment for potential homeowners in the Wilmington, North Carolina region.
Though characterized by beautiful beaches and exquisite dining, Kure Beach typically has fewer tourists than other regional beaches, making it a gem for the homeowner or renter seeking a quiet, upscale coastal town to call home.
The two main public beaches in the area are Kure Beach and Fort Fisher Beach. Kure Beach boasts easy waves and is walking distance from local restaurants, bars, and shops. Kure Beach’s Ocean Front Park is the town’s largest green space, and contains an open-air pavilion that regularly hosts concerts and weddings, as well as a playground for children and families. Fort Fisher Beach is a short drive south, and tends to be a bit more rugged, lined with unforgettable live oak trees and smooth stones, and offers a spectacular view from the pier.
Aside from its sandy white beach stretches, Kure Beach’s main attraction is the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. This dynamic museum contains over 300 species of marine animals from in and around the Cape Fear River Basin. It is truly an ecologically unique ecosystem, and the museum is an excellent showcase for the region’s incredible wildlife. Observe the aquarium’s rare albino alligator, touch a live bamboo shark, pet a stingray, or check out the exotic jellyfish exhibit. For locals or visitors, the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is a must-see.
In addition to its amazing natural habitat, Kure Beach is also rich with Civil War history. Fort Fisher served as the last major port for the Confederate army during the last years of the American Civil War. For that reason, the attacks on Fort Fisher served as a catalyst for the end of the war. The Battle at Fort Fisher is commemorated with a museum, and regular Civil War reenactments that feature experts and historians giving guided tours, and live demonstrations of restored cannons. Kure Beach’s historical significance and distinctly Southern charm set it apart from the average beach town.
Kure Beach is a short commute to nearby exciting towns such as Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, and Carolina Beach. In addition, you can take a ferry to the charming coastal town of Southport, which is just 35 minutes across the Cape Fear River. Its quiet atmosphere, freshly caught seafood, and proximity to local attractions make Kure Beach an ideal place to make a home.
